Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico | Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Spent three nights dispersed camping on BLM land just outside of Parks Ranch Campground near Whites City, NM. This put us about a half hour drive either way between Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park on the Texas-New Mexico border.

At Carlsbad Caverns, we took the easy way down via the 750 foot elevator straight to the caverns. Once down, we walked the 1.25 mile Big Room Trail, which is a self guided tour through the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America.

The tallest mountains in the US are in Alaska and the tallest in the Continental US are in California, Colorado, and Washington. For once, Texas may not be home to the biggest… but the ancient fossil reef complex that makes up most of the Guadalupe Mountains is still an impressive sight, towering over the Chihuahuan Desert. The four tallest mountains in Texas all reside in the park.

This would also be our last time this year sleeping outside of Texas since we left in January…
