White Sands National Park, New Mexico | Las Cruces, New Mexico:

Established base camp in Las Cruces, NM for our journey through the Dunes of Arrakas… also known as White Sands National Park.

Between wandering the sands and filling our bellies with Christmas (red & green chili sauce) enchiladas and pozole, we didn’t spend much time at our first KOA of the trip. After living off grid for most of the last month, it felt strange to have unlimited hot water and electricity. However, the Kampground did have a nice view of the Organ Mountains.

The National Weather Service issued a 40-60mph wind advisory warning the day we headed to White Sands. Cindy dug through our winter gear and found our stillsuits (balaclavas) to protect us from the the wind and sand worms…

    I must not fear.
    Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
    I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
